What Is A Ringtone? A
ringtone or ring tone is the sound made by a telephone to indicate an
incoming call. The term usually refers to the customizable sounds
available on mobile phones. The customizable ringtone
feature was originally created so people could tell when their phone
was ringing rather than someone else's mobile phone. Today, mobile
phone users rely on cool ringtones to personalize their phones, express
their individuality, show their appreciation for a favorite artist, and

Types of Ringtones There are several types of ringtones. The kind you select is usually
based on your phone model and the types of tones it can play. A
Truetone, sometimes called a Realtone, Mastertone or Musictone, is the
highest quality ringtone available, and it sounds just like the
original song off a CD, iPod or MP3 player. A Truetone is a ringtone
which has been created from a high-fidelity digital format such MP3,
AAC, or WMV format, just like your PC or MP3 player plays, and
Truetones are the latest evolution of ringtone technology. Truetones,
which are often excerpts from rap, hip hop, rock, pop or country songs,
have become popular as ringtones. Truetones work on most currently
available mobile phones, as well as most phones sold in the last few
years.
The next most popular ringtone type is the Polyphonic ringtone. A
Polyphonic ringtone, or "Poly tone" as it's sometimes called, is a
lower quality tone than the Truetone, but it can still can play several
different "instruments" or tones at a time (up to 72 tones in more
modern phones). The first polyphonic ringtones used recording methods
such as MIDI. Such recordings
tell the phone's speaker what instrument should play a particular note
and when, but the quality of the sound depends on things like the
phone's CPU, speaker quality, and age. Poly tones are compatible with
most currently available phones and most older phones as well.
